Sample Press Releases & Advisories

Communicating with the media to "get the word out" about your campaign need not be nearly as stressful as some people think. Keep communications simple, direct, and short. Reporters are busy. If you want to see an article in the paper, write a sample story (make sure its newsworthy), and fax it to key reporters. If you want television coverage, then you must supply some images - usually through a press event. An event can be a lot of citizen activists holding signs in front of city hall or a threatened open space. Events can be held around report releases, protests, or when you call on an elected official to do the right thing.

A sample article you send to a reporter is called a Press Release. An announcement of an event you'll be holding is called a Press Advisory. Releases are longer, advisories are shorter. See some of the samples below for more details. With either one, after sending it in, be sure to follow up, follow up, follow up!
